James and Dolley Madison House in Society Hill Lists for $3.2M

The couple lived here before becoming president and first lady

Before James Madison became the fourth president of the United States, he lived at 429 Spruce Street with his wife Dolley from 1794 to 1797. Today, that same Federal-style rowhome in Society Hill is on the market asking for a pretty penny.

Historical photos taken some time after 1933 reveal that much of the home's interiors have been preserved, thanks in part to the current owner who the listing describes as a "traditional perfectionist." But there are a number of modern upgrades mixed in.

Today, the 4-bedroom, 4.5-bath home sits at 3,145 square feet and has a New Orleans-style porch off the back; and there's another deck with a hot tub and a spiral staircase that leads down to the lower patio surrounded by greenery.

The asking price of this historic home is $3,200,000.
